Our cat Custard believes that writing time is petting time. The kids aren’t around to disturb her, so we should be available to devote our attention to her, right?

Before we start writing, we’re getting something to drink or snack on, grabbing our laptops, and heading to our chairs. The rocking chair at the desk for TJ. The big blue easy chair for me.

The kids are having “Quiet Time” upstairs where they are given an hour and a half of downtime without computers or TV. Where they can have that unscheduled time each day that is good for a child’s soul. Where Mommy & Daddy get a break. And sometimes it stretches into two hours if we getting into the writing groove.

This is the time when the cat mysteriously reappears from upstairs where she’d been sleeping. Or hiding from the kids. Now that the kids are upstairs, she comes down.

And settles into TJ’s writing chair. She KNOWS he’s going to move her. When he does, she jumps up onto the desk and settles in such a way that he can’t possibly write. Thus begins the battle of the wills as she attempts to settle on his lap. Or his keyboard. Or his lap again. Or my lap. Or on my arms while I’m trying to type. Or on my keyboard … which is covered in cat fur, by the way.

She’s ripped TJ’s shirt when he blocked her from jumping up after he put her down on the floor. She was trying to grab on to him rather than fall back down on her ass.

She’s even ripped keypads off the keyboard as she tried to scramble up onto the desk. We couldn’t fix it, so we had to replace the keyboard.

This is a daily writing battle. So next time you read our stories, just know that there is a cat in the shadows of each and every scene, and she is watching you. She has even inserted her fur into the hidden network fibers of the documents.

KAY: So, if you were granted three wishes, what would you ask for?

Seth: **crosses his legs, raises his left eyebrow and stares at me a long moment** I don’t really want to answer that question right now. Next one, please.

KAY: Okay. How do you fall in love? At first sight? Or over a long period?

Seth: I don’t fall in love. Love is a minefield of magnetic bombs waiting for you to swallow the iron pill. It pulls you in, and then boom! You’re dead. **uncrosses his legs and stares at me**

KAY: That's kind of sad you feel that way. How do you decide if you can trust someone? First impressions? Intuition? Do you test the person somehow? Or are you just generally disposed to trust or not to trust?

Seth: I wonder if I didn’t make myself clear in the previous question. But I’ll humor you this one time. I trusted once, loved once. What did I get in the end? Betrayal. Heartache. Next question, please.

KAY: What really moves you, or touches you to the soul? And that’s not the same thing as the love question, by the way.

Seth: **chuckles and grins with his black-blue eyes** A double-edge sword kind of question. You get me to answer this one, and then you think you can figure out how I’d answer the little wishes question, right? One word, one thing touches my soul. It’s all that matters…power. I intend to have it. And I’ll get it anyway I have to.

KAY: When you walk into a room, what do you notice first? Second?

Seth: Well I’d notice you if you were sitting in there. You have such lovely brown eyes. I could swim in them until the silver moon rises on high next year.

KAY: Okay. Thanks, I think. On the other hand, when you walk into a room, what do you expect people to notice about you?

Seth: Well I don’t know, lovely. If walked into a room which one of my assets would you pay attention to first? **gives me a dimpled grin as I turn red**

Are we almost done with these…incredibly fun questions? I have to get back to the Camp. New trainees are arriving shortly.

KAY: Of course. Just a couple more. What do you consider your special talent?
Seth: I make things happen that you wouldn’t believe. Even if you’d just seen it with your eyes all the way open.

KAY: What's the worst thing you've ever done? Why?
Seth: Are you really prepared to hear me answer that question? Take my advice and skip it.

KAY: What are you most afraid of?
Seth: Easy enough. Nothing.
KAY: Describe yourself to me.

The art form I create when writing is much more interesting than anything you will ever know or learn about me. However, since you ask, I have lived in Tennessee and Georgia my entire life, except for one “lost summer” spent in Los Angeles. I was always a complex kid. My first published stories were for a local underground rock publication in Nashville. I have published articles on music, fashion, art, travel and history.

Edgar Allan Poe and Anne Rice have always fascinated me, although like any Southern girl, I will always idolize Margaret Mitchell for writing Gone With The Wind. I live in Atlanta, Georgia with my husband, my books, too many clothes, too many shoes and way too many stacks of notepads and journals. 

September 2013 will see the launch of my first novel, a contemporary romance, written in collaboration with English author and poet, R.J. Askew.
