My daughter Makani asked me to share this with you.
Birds
by Makani D. Webb
(age 8)
I have a black-capped chickadee
in my own backyard
It goes chick-a-dee-dee-dee
There’s also a winter wren
Chick-a-dee-dee-dee
Or was it a northern mockingbird
Chick-a-dee-dee-dee
And a House sparrow too
Chick-a-dee-dee-dee
Don’t you like the brown kiwi bird?
Chick-a-dee-dee-dee
And also the bald eagle
Chick-a-dee-dee-dee
Don’t you just love birds, Chick-a-dee-dee-dee?
Hey, Sweetie
Witchity, witchity
Tea-kettle, Tea-kettle, tea-kettle
Hey, Sweetie
Witchity
Tea-kettle
Chick-a-dee-dee-dee

Peach Ice Cream
Peach Ice Cream
by Makani D. Webb & Rita J. Webb
by Makani D. Webb & Rita J. Webb
I am the sun sleeping behind the storm clouds.
I am the clouds blanketing the sun, kissing the sun while it sleeps.
I am the rain splattering the ground, the plants, the houses. I pitter patter against your windows with my sleepy voice.
I am the tree who ate the rain so I can grow.
I am the flower next to the tree, waving in the wind. "Wake up, sun," my leaves call.
I am the peach growing fat on the tree that ate the rain.
I am the girl who picks the peach on the tree that ate the rain.
I am the mother who freezes the peach and makes the ice cream.
We are the family who eats the ice cream made from peaches.
Who are you?
poetry
the words spin and dance inside my head
my brain fizzles and pops
whistles and frizzles
looping and swooping
eyelids drooping
you'd think i'd learn by now
take a deep breath
put the book down
enjoy a moment with a rose
my brain fizzles and pops
whistles and frizzles
looping and swooping
eyelids drooping
you'd think i'd learn by now
take a deep breath
put the book down
enjoy a moment with a rose
Thinking Inside the Box
Poetry is not my thing. But there are times when something strikes me funny, and an impromptu verse pours out of me as if it had dislodged from the cobwebs in the corner of my mind.
So today I was jabbering with a friend who complained about business cliches that incited him to frenzy--phrases like "touch base" and "take this discussion offline". But then he mentioned "thinking outside of the box" and suddenly I started spewing.
Enjoy.

Enjoy.
I climb into a box before I start to think.
And imagine the world beyond my horizons.
From my box, I sail the ocean
Climbing waves
And fighting pirates on the high sea
From my box, I climb Mount Everest
Or dive from the sky like an eagle
And when I am done with my thoughts
I crawl out of my box
And make my dreams come true.
